Peter 16th August 2020

I was privileged to meet Fraser at last in 2017, having heard much about him from our mutual friend and mentor Peter Witchell. Sadly however, it was in preparation for Peter's memorial service that we first came into contact, and it was our experience of playing together alongside Jenny Kelsey at this event, and our desire to keep Peter's memory alive that resulted in the formation of the Witchell Trio. We found an immediate musical rapport. The all too brief years of playing together centred upon several deeply moving performances of Rachmaninov's two wonderful trios élégiaques in Peter's memory. Fraser rose to these (and other) challenging works with huge technical and emotional maturity, and the experience we shared is undoubtedly one of the high points in my musical life. It is tragic that the theme of grief and loss, so central to our repertoire, should spill over into the life of the trio so directly with Fraser's premature passing. The loss we feel is beyond words. Thank you Fraser for giving so much to music, to us, and all those whose lives you touched. Peter Coates
